A
natural slough such as the one above becomes an ugly mudhole as
trees, brush and grass are bulldozed away and the original sponge-like
dirt is dug out to create a large pond to catch storm-water runoff
from land soon to be paved and roofed over by an apartment complex
on Beechwood Avenue between 15th and 18th streets south of the University
of Arkansas' indoor track building and adjacent baseball field.
Such a pond is not necessarily more effective in reducing flooding
than the natural wetland above. Also, the natural area allows water
to be cleansed and to replenish the underground aquifer.
